Double Barrel Comparo
FA MAS F1 (Tokyo Marui) vs. FA MAS F1 (real deal!)

by ARTsenal

For those 'soft-hearted, these are comparisons of airsoft guns and their real counterparts that they are to either compliment.....or insult. How well did the Japanese faithfully copy the originals? It is this awesome craftsmanship that airsoft owes part of their popularity to and it is worth examining and comparing. Both airsoft and the originals are owned by yours truly so there's no bias as to which is better or which I prefer. Here's what panned out........

Tokyo Marui FA MAS F-1, Nationale D'Armes MAS .223 Gettin' the obvious differences out:
Tokyo Marui FA MAS F-1: 5 lbs, 6mm caliber, select-fire, $300-400 USD.
Nationale D'Armes MAS .223: 8 lbs, 5.56mm caliber, semi-auto, $4000-5000 USD.

The F-1 is the French military issue that T' Marui has copied down to the atomic level of the real FA MAS. Exterior details are recreated in the F-1 housing from the grooved foregrip to the textured buttstock. The folding bi-pod is functional, well detailed from its pivots to the spaded feet, and offers steadiness. The real FA MAS is ambidex'ed (right or left handed user) as is the F-1 with its removable cheek peice and swing out trigger guard(if your gloves are too large). What gives both FA MAS and F-1 their unique design character is the large oversized carrying handle/site/guard which T' Marui has managed to not only clone but function exactly as its counterpart. 3-size selector on the rear sights and 2-style selector on the front sight (adjustable windage or left/right correcting). This carrying handle protects the movable charging handle and pseudo-grenade sight on the F-1. The grenade sight, and grenade range calibrater barrel is a bonus detail not found on my civilian FA MAS. You can even read the range numbers on the barrel!! The fire selector is present and functional on the F-1 but has been omitted from my semi-auto.

How Anal! For those who want their T'Marui F-1's to match the real deal, the actual FA MAS is nothing more than a black hi-impact housing for the rifle components, though, some of the metal components are exposed and those are the magazine housing, detailed section of the charging handle, trigger, and bolt body(that trapezoidal detail above the mag housing and below the cheek rest. Paint these items gunmetal (dark metallic gray) and when that's done, dull-spray the entire gun to kill that "toy" shine on the housing. The front sight (not the blade sight) has to be carefully drilled out to create a front "peep" sight that exists on the real gun. Final touches to "militarize" your F-1 is quite pricey and will determine if it will be a wall prize or a paint-range gun. My real FA MAS comes with an original and unique French sling that mounts to one of the bi-pod pivots and a bayonet. Both will mount on the T'Marui.....how's that for comin' close to real?? MFI has both.

Howard Stern? Whether you love him or hate him, or if you just never heard of the guy, I would recommend this airsoft him. Yes, this gun is so awesome that I purchased two of 'em (customized one into the short-barrel FA MAS Commando). Shooting the both of them are unique in its own. The full-auto capability and expenses per shot fired makes the airsoft version very flexible over the real gun. Ugly and as unorthodox a design that it is, T'Marui's copy is extraordinary and justifies the belief that imitation is the best form of flattery.
